Scale Model Mates
After stepping away from model building for about 25 years, I picked it up again in 2016. Back in the day, I used to paint everything with brushes and those wonderfully fragrant Humbrol paint pots. My painting skills were decent for the time, but by the time I restarted in 2016, I had already watched countless YouTube videos from talented model builders worldwide.
I became fascinated by airbrushing and its techniques. I decided to treat myself to an airbrush, and that's when my enthusiasm began to grow. Inspired by all the YouTube tutorials, I started improving my skills. I spent hours, days, and weeks working on various projects as best I could, starting with a Tamiya A-10 Warthog.
I also learned how to apply different layers, starting with primers, followed by base coats, a clear coat, proper drying times, and optionally adding washes. In those early days, I attended many model-building expos and quickly connected with fellow enthusiasts, forming lasting friendships. This led to a group of us creating a WhatsApp group called "Scale Model Mates." Here, we share updates on our projects, offer help by answering each other's questions, and exchange tips.
In 2023, some of our group members, included myself, exhibited at Euro Scale Modelling (ESM) in Houten, Netherlands, an annual event organized by IPMS Netherlands.
The enthusiasm in our group is immense, and I hope we can keep this passion alive for many years to come.
